Advancing Pharma Cold Chain & Logistics

Building a Seamless, Resilient & Robust Cold Chain System

13 Sep - 14 Sep 2022

Workshop Overview

‘Cold Chain’ refers to a subset of the total supply chain involving the production, storage, and distribution of products that require some level of temperature control in order to retain their key characteristics and associated value.

The term Cold Chain originates from the terminology for the ‘chain of custody’ in the production, packaging, distribution, and control of temperature sensitive product. This includes the traditional areas of supply chain, to include raw material acquisition, transformation and manufacturing processes, packaging and product protection, storage, and distribution. Requirements for temperature control vary across the end-to-end process – from starting material acquisition to delivery to patient

Program Focus

The workshop has been designed to provide an orientation on the overall Cold Chain, with modules and materials for participants to explore and expand on the most critical aspects of Cold Chain Logistics

These modules are designed to build upon each other - the primary foundation being the holistic supply chain environment with all the participants in this eco system. This provides a broad and shallow end to end perspective of the supply chain and the risks and mitigation that is required to protect time and temperature sensitive products and materials. Trainer will make a differentiation on materials versus products as the starting materials are in many cases blood and human cells which are fresh and time and temp sensitive. The finished product is in many cases cryo preserved and although there are risks for temperature variations and fracture if dropped the time element is less critical as the range ensures product stability. Then the specific building blocks are added on top of this to expand awareness and expertise in each of these areas.

Participants will be provided with Industry Best practices in each of the following areas, all of which are critical to establishing a Safe and Secure Supply Chain for temperature sensitive materials and finished products. Case Studies & examples will be shared during the 2-day course along with group exercises & interactive sessions will be conducted throughout the training.

Benefits of Attending

Cold chain logistics dominated the pharmaceutical logistics market with a revenue share of over 28.0% in 2021, expected to expand at a significant CAGR from 2022 to 2030.

In addition to the growing demand for Covid-19 vaccines, there is growth in other pharmaceutical sectors, to include biologics and cell and gene therapies. All of these require temperature-controlled supply chains to ensure product efficacy.

In addition, regulators in the EU – and globally – have introduced regulations to maintain accurate temperature control when materials and the products they support are stored and transported.

This has put additional pressure on global supply chains, which were constrained to a large extent during the early days of the pandemic and continue to experience issues. Understanding the participants, processes and technologies that can be used to manage and monitor these critical products will provide participants with the knowledge and expertise to develop and implement strategies and blueprints for their own supply chain environment.

Who Should Attend?

  • Within your product portfolio do you have any materials or products that are sensitive to environmental issues, for example temperature, intrusion, vibration, light, shock?
  • Does your portfolio and product development strategy include products that fall under the umbrella of Cold Chain?
  • Do you currently have storage, production or distribution facilities that need to be upgraded to support Cold Chain operations?
  • Are there any products in the pipeline – or potential new acquisitions that will require Cold Chain material handling?
  • If the answer to any of these questions is YES – do they have the required expertise in house to develop the appropriate packaging, labelling, storage and distribution strategy?

Supply chains include an extended network of participants, to include suppliers of materials and components, storage and transportation providers as well as enterprises engaged in the research to distribution lifecycle for pharmaceuticals, biologicals and advanced therapies that are temperature sensitive.

The workshop will address issues that are relevant to all these participants
